Micron to invest $9.6 billion in Japan to build AI memory chip plant, Nikkei reports
Micron Technology is making a major strategic move by planning to invest $9.6 billion in a new semiconductor plant in Hiroshima, Japan, according to reports from Nikkei. This facility will focus on producing advanced AI memory chips, specifically High Bandwidth Memory (HBM)

Micron’s $9.6B leap into Japan — in simple, human language

Micron is making a huge move — the kind that signals a shift in the global tech landscape. According to reports from Nikkei, the company plans to pour $9.6 billion into building a new chip factory in Hiroshima, Japan.

But this isn’t just any factory.
It’s meant to create the high-speed, high-bandwidth memory chips that power the world’s most demanding AI systems — the kind behind, self-driving cars, giant data centers, and every futuristic application you can imagine.

What exactly is being built?

Micron is planning a plant that will produce HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) — memory chips designed specifically for AI workloads.
HBM is basically the “super fuel” for AI: insanely fast, energy-efficient, and purpose-built for handling massive data flows.

Imagine AI as an athlete — HBM is the oxygen tank that keeps it running.

When does this all happen?

The plan is to begin construction in May 2026, using part of Micron’s existing Hiroshima site.
If everything goes smoothly, the factory could start producing chips by 2028, right when global demand for AI hardware is expected to be even more intense than now.

Japan is fully backing this effort

And Japan isn’t just watching from the sidelines.
The government is stepping in with a huge subsidy — reportedly up to ¥500 billion (around $3 billion).

Why?
Japan wants to rebuild a strong semiconductor industry. For decades, it was a world leader. Now it wants that role back — and AI chips are a chance to get there.
